She came up Friday night to spend the night in Malibu with me and brought the kids and I just wasn't prepared to leave them Saturday so I just had to go with! First things first, my love for my 'muffins', as I often refer to them, is unconditional. I love Savannah and Justice more than I ever thought was possible to love another human being. The amount of joy, innocence, and zest they have for life is inspiring. They are truly, two of the most amazing little people I know. A large part of this has to do with their amazing Mom for raising them in such a fabulous and respectable manner. She is the best Mom I've ever seen. So, Saturday we packed up the car--it looked like we were going on a vacation for a month--and we set out for Santa Barbara. We decided to take the Coastal route because it was such a beautiful day. This was a great idea until we hit Oxnard and took a major detour through Downtown Oxnard--not the best place in the world. Despite our hiccup/lapse in judgment, we arrived in Santa Barbara just in time for lunch where we ventured to Sate Street. Both my sisters and my brother-in-law went to UCSB so this is their territory--their stomping ground for sure. We headed to natural cafe where I indulged in the most sensational chicken burrito--so good that I almost ate the whole thing--and then luckily proceeded to walk up and down State Street for a few hours. I was able to walk some of the burrito off at least. Following our stroll we went to our Hotel, The Monecito Inn, which brought back so many fabulous memories. We then ventured down to the spa so that Savvy and Justice could sneak in a pre-dinner swim and quickly returned shortly after to get ready for our fabulous meal at Blush. Blush is an absolutely wondefrul restaurant that everyone should go to when in SB. My brother-in-law programmed the music for them!

The next day we woke up early to attempt a visit to the zoo. After sitting in stopped traffic we finally asked what was going on and we were told that it was "Dia De Los Ninos" at the zoo--aka day of the kids. It was so unbelievably crowded that we turned around and opted for a much better option--the aquarium at the pier. This was fabulous. We explored the sea life in the aquarium, took photos on the pier, and got ice cream for the kids. I can't think of a better end to the weekend than this! Overall, my weekend in SB was incredible with my muffins and I am so thankful that I went. Here are some photos!
What a beautiful place to call home. I am so blessed that I grew up in Washington and was granted the opportunity to cruise aboard our boat throughout the San Juan Island's and up into Canada as a child. My favorite memories as a child are as a result of these opportunities that I had granted by God. While turning 21 is truly a milestone, it marks an era that requires responsibility and accountability. Turning 21 reminded me of the fact that when I graduate, I will only be 22. This is now a year away. The thought of moving on from life as I know it is terrifying, stressful, and overwhelming at times. Despite my nerves and fear about the future, I had a phenomenal 21st birthday celebration. I am truly blessed to have such inspiring and amazing friends. To celebrate, we embarked on the Malibu wine tour train and enjoyed a very rainy day of love, laughter, and celebration. Here are photos from the day:
The Malibu Wine tour began around 11am and ended around 4pm. This day was so fabulous. We were picked up from my apartment in the Malibu grapes van and were then whisked off to the Rosenthal Estate Winery on PCH for four tastings. We enjoyed our time there and especially enjoyed the Surfrider Sauvignon Blanc. We then traipsed up Malibu Canyon in the torrential rain to Cornell Winery where we enjoyed another four tastings and the Saddlerock Pinot Noir. The ambiance of this tasting room was incredible. It was so rustic and unique. Vintage chandeliers and candelabras adorned the room to inspire a cozy feeling. Next, we went to the Cielo Estate tasting room off Kanan. This tasting room was so adorable. Our group was nestled into a cozy corner complete with blankets and an excellent snack tray complete with grapes, delicious cheeses, crackers, and delicious wine. This tasting room was by far my favorite. We tasted another four wines but they were very generous...need I say, we stayed there the longest. My favorite wine from this adventure was the Honeypie Woodstock Collection. Normally this wine retails for about $35 but they told them to my group for $24! My friends and I loved Cielo so much that we decided we will be making monthly trips to the tasting room.
We prepared for a week of fun, sun, love, and laughter. Naturally, we rented a house to stay in that was titled "The Sexy Compound" on their website. Instantly, we knew that we were in for a week full of memories. Here is a recap of the week...

Day 1: We arrived around 4pm at the Sexy Compound. We called Nona, the 90 year-old property manager, and she directed us to the SC. We instantly fell in love. The Sexy Compound was all we could have asked for and more. Complete with a spacious casida, a pool, a jacuzzi, and five bedrooms, we knew that this compound would serve all of our needs. We instantly began to celebrate and took full advantage of the SC.

Day 2: We woke up around 9am to clean the mess in the SC that looked like a category-5 hurricane had trampled through. We then prepared a delicious breakfast complete with egg whites, turkey bacon, and toast and immediately ventured outside to begin day 1 of tanning. Our horrifically pale bodies definitely needed some color. After a fabulous morning day in the sun, the best afternoon of my life happened. Four of my girlfriend's and I went to the backyard and laid in the grass for three hours straight--talking about life and eating delicious bean dip. The conversations that we had and the experience will forever be engraved in my heart.

Day 3: More and more sun occurred which worked wonders on our self-esteem. We laid by the pool all day long listening to music and having great conversations with our beloved friends. Two of our best guy-friend's drove up to Palm Springs and surprised us with their visit which was fabulous! That night, we went to Dell Taco, which was the most hilarious experience of life. There must have been a retirement home convention going on because there were literally 90 people in Dell Taco over the age of 75 years-old. They were so adorable. They were all joining in fellowship with one another over fast Mexican food, however, they were prepared to be there all night long. They brought board games, homemade desserts, and their smiles. They were so happy and elated to be there. It reminded me of just how blessed my life is and how when I am 90, I hope to enjoy the simple pleasures of Dell Taco and fellowship.

Day 4: Even more sun. By Day 4 we were all exhausted and ready to go home but we rallied and decided to make the best of our last day/night. We decided to go out to dinner at this Mexican restaurant called Blue Agave, which turned out to be quite a hilarious experience--definitely one to remember. Our cab ride home that night was nothing short of unreal. Our driver proceeded to discuss her love life with us in great detail, despite the fact that none of us asked for this. Disturbed by our unnecessary conversations and graphic imagery left behind as a result, we all climbed into the CalKing bed and channeled our energy towards the most amazing and inspiring blog ever--Stylemepretty.com. My four girlfriend's and I looked at this blog for almost three hours, exploring the infinite possibilities of love and beauty.Chelsea Cowleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16997642801139923047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951363124514081785.post-54295711991395052182011-04-12T04:01:00.000+02:002011-04-12T04:01:18.464+02:00San FranciscoThis year, I have been trying to explore as much as California as possible and have tried to venture on weekend trips. It is so strange not being able to take the train to Paris on a Thursday night and return on Sunday night. So, to make up for my travel related depression, my friends and I decided to venture to San Francisco for the weekend! To make the six-hour drive easier, we drove to Santa Barbara early Friday morning for brunch. We chose to eat at the cutest little restaurant on State Street. We had a delicious meal and phenomenal mimosas. We then ventured on and finally arrived in San Francisco around 6pm Friday night. After a long, arduous drive we were so thankful to finally be there. My Brother-in-Law DJ's on the side and he happened to be DJ'ing at a little dive bar in the city called Butter. My two sister's and my two friend's and I hopped in a taxi and arrived just in time! This dive bar was hilarious. It was 'trailer trash' themed and included a food stand inside that featured 'trailer trash' food such as tater tots, mozzarella sticks, fried mac & cheese, and buffalo wings. We definitely partook in the trailer trash food-ordering and loved every minute of it.
The next day we woke up early to explore the marina. We ironically ended up running into Justin Burn's, who is my childhood's best friend's brother. He invited us up to his rooftop deck to view the most amazing view ever. The view looked out over the SF bay, Alcatraz, and the Golden Gate Bridge. It was truly amazing and reminded me of how beautiful SF is. I feel so blessed to be able to travel throughout the United States and to experience life to the fullest.Chelsea Cowleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16997642801139923047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951363124514081785.post-81164875469249421132011-04-12T03:11:00.000+02:002011-04-12T03:11:12.762+02:00The next 5 6. There are so many places that I would love to explore but for now, here are my TOP 10:

Zanzibar, Africa

Zanzibar is located in the Indian Ocean, about 25 miles from the Tanzanian Coast. It is an incredible Island that is said to be one of the only surviving Ancient towns in Africa characterized by beautiful sandy beaches with fringing coral reefs. Zanzibar’s local people are an incredible mixture of ethnic backgrounds, indicative of her colorful history. Islam is the dominant religion. Zanzibar is an island state within the United Republic of Tanzania, and has its own semi-autonomous government made up of a Revolutionary Council and House of Representatives. The current President is Amani Karume. The economy is primarily based on fishing an agriculture produced by the local peoples. Zanzibar is a hidden gem of Africa and is a place that I would love to visit at some point in my life.

This past week I went to Athens, Greece for my 'educational field trip'. The week was action packed but was very enjoyable and beautiful. We stayed in Athens for the week but took many day trips to the islands and other parts of Greece outside of Athens. Our hotel was at the base of the Acropolis which was breathtakingly beautiful and was a short walk to most of the fabulous sites in Athens. This is a quick run down on what we did!

Day 1: We arrived around 3:30 pm so this was a free day to explore. We walked around and explored the city, bought souvenirs, and picked up some yummy feta cheese pizza!

Day 2: We woke up at the crack of dawn to set sail aboard the 'flying cat 1' to the Greek islands of Poros and Hydra. These islands were so beautiful and were a lot of fun. Poros is a quaint, less traveled Greek island so its authenticity remains high and few tourists visit. We sipped on the best cappuccinos and gazed out at the beautiful sea for about an hour. Then we went shopping, of course, where I found two divine pillow cases. I am so excited to decorate my apartment next year with the fabulous things I collect throughout my travels! Afterward, we ate a fabulous greek meal, complete with tezaki, hummus, grilled pita, fried zucchini, feta cheese balls, greek salad, and excellent olive oil. The Greek are so hospitable and appear to be extremely joyous and relaxed. Poros definitely had the 'island time' vibe going on and I loved relaxing and exploring. Next, we set sail abroad the 'flying dolphin' to the Greek island of Hydra. Hydra is a more known, touristy area that is special because there is not a single car on the island. Every resident/tourist uses donkeys to navigate around the island. Hydra was the picturesque Greek island with beautiful Mediterranean style villas, blue and white buildings, and fabulous hiking. We hiked around for a bit and found a spot that had about 35 'slum cats' as we called them. They were adorable but were all abandoned and very sick. Afterward, we sat down at a cafe on the water front for a few 'Tiger' beers, which I hadn't had since Vietnam so I was very excited! After a long day of exploring the Greek islands we headed home and went out to a lovely dinner. Our dinner was amazing and we got eight free bottles of wine! The Greek love tourists, especially Americans, and will do anything for their business. That night, I learned that 'Yaimas' means 'cheers' and we used that phrase quite a bit....

The day started off by traveling outside of Athens to see the Mycenae ruins, including the tombs and palaces. It was awesome. We hiked up a mountain to the top of the Mycenae acropolis which was wonderful and had a great view. After this, we went to lunch at a delicious taverna and stuffed our faces. Next, we stopped at this medieval port city called Nafplion that had adorable shops, cafes, and ruins of fortresses and castles. This was so amazing to see! I had the best 24 hour trip ever! I met up with my two best friends from London, Carson and Azzurra and we had, yet another, romantic weekend together! This weekend was simply magical, full of love, laughter, exploration, yummy wine, and enough memories to last a life time. I feel so blessed to have two AMAZING best friends in my life and they were the perfect pair to see Paris with! Our adventures began Friday morning at the Gare de Lyon when I stepped off my train and was greeted with contagious smiles and open arms. We found our way to our hotel in the Latin Quarters-Hotel Sully St. Germain-which I highly recommend for an inexpensive and charming hotel. We checked in and set out on our Paris exploration! First, we visited the Musee de l'Orangerie near the Champs Elysees, that had the most spectacular impressionist art. On display was the Lily Pad series by Monet and it was truly incredible and life changing. My whole perspective on art changed and opened my eyes to a wider spectrum of modern art! This was a fabulous little spot, full of Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh, and much much more. At the museum we met up with Britt who is also studying abroad in London and is one of my best friends from last year. I hadn't seen him since August! After the museum we strolled along the Champs Elysees, ate at Laudree (fabulous macaroons + chocolate croissants), which was adorable and so charming, and climbed the Arc de Triomphe. The view on the roof top is incredible. No words or pictures can do it justice, but essentially I saw the entire city of Paris and beyond lit up at night and it was breath taking. After this, we went back to our hotel to get ready for the night and quickly after set out to the Eiffel Tower to pop champagne and celebrate our amazing lives. We had such a great time goofing around and taking fun photos with our champagne directly beneath the tower. The Eiffel Tower is much larger than I expected and is an incredible monument. It was so beautiful lit up at night and really set the tone for the night. After falling in love with Paris, champagne, each other, and life in general, Britt arrived and we went to dinner. After dinner we went to the cutest wine bar and sipped a nice Bourgenion rouge. We chatted and once again, enjoyed each others presence. After realizing that it was 2 am and we had to wake up at 8:30 to explore more of the city we strolled back to our lovely hotel and went to sleep!

Saturday, we had a fabulous petite dejuner complete with the best cappacino, baguettes with butter and jam, and a croissant. It was delicious. We then saw Notre Dame which was amazing, as well as the Louvre. Both of these locations were incredible and only allowed me to fall deeper in love with Paris. For lunch, we ate at Azzurra's grandmothers favorite restaurant in Paris called 'Le Souffle' and that is exactly what it is. An assortment of amazing soufles as well as fabulous salads, poultry, and french onion soup. This place was adorable and defined Paris. Afterwards it was time to say goodbye in order to catch our trains. It was sad to say goodbye but I will be seeing them soon in Switzerland and then in Prague. This semester has opened my eyes to an entirely new appreciation on life and I am so happy to have such inspiring, beautiful, and intelligent best friends. We had a blast. On Friday, Hanna and I picked them up from the train station and explored Lausanne while giving Carson and Ally a tour of our beautiful city. They absolutely loved it! It has been snowing non-stop in Lausanne since Thursday. It has been very cold but is so beautiful. After renting our skis and boots for our ski adventure on Saturday, we hurried back to the house in a blizzard, dropped off our ski gear, and went to fondue! Our favorite outing of course. Afterward, we came home watched movies and talked for hours!

Saturday, we went to Verbier to ski! Verbier is one of the prettiest places I have ever been. Due to the frequent and heavy snowfall in the past days, there was waist deep fresh powder. It was truly sensational. The skiing was phenomenal and we spent most of our time it the terrain park with our friend Clay who is rather good at snowboarding. I cannot even describe this place and pictures do not do it justice but here are some photos!

This weekend was fabulous. Another restful weekend in Lausanne full of love and laughter. I experienced new things and met new people this weekend. We went to Coco Chanel's grave on Friday. Coco Chanel lived in Lausanne for 10 years and could not leave this beautiful place. She is buried in the most beautiful cemetary i've ever seen. With a view of the Alps and the brisk air and greenery, it makes for the perfect place to rest. Next weekend my best friend Carson is coming to Lausanne and we plan to go to Zermatt to ski. I am looking forward to her visit and cannot wait to share my love for Lausanne with her. I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend full of laughter, love, and tears of joy.
The beauty never ceases to amaze me and continues to surprise me. From the incredible sunsets on Lake Geneva to the occasional gentle snowfall, I live in the most beautiful place in the world. This past weekend I stayed in Lausanne to further explore and that is exactly what I did. I went with a few friends to search for new restaurants and fun places to hangout at night. We stumbled upon the cutest place ever. Tucked away in a staircase leading to the Lausanne Cathedral, was this adorable place called "Le Barbare" adorned with beautiful ivy and window boxes. Inside was an intimate, hole in the wall place. The waitress was an adorable Swiss French woman who owned the restaurant and lives upstairs. She cooks all of the meals in her kitchen and was the most delightful person I've ever met. Not to mention the food was incredible. This place is known for their hot chocolate, which is virtually a melted Swiss chocolate bar in a ceramic mug. I instantly fell in love and will return soon.

My roommate from Pepperdine last year (who transferred) happened to be studying abroad as well and she came to Lausanne on Sunday. We had so much fun! Some friends and I showed her around Lausanne from the Lake all the way to the Cathedral. We had the most amazing picnic on a dock on Lake Geneva and chatted about lifes simple pleasures. Afterward we went to fondue where Morgan tried cheese fondue for the first time! Needless to say, she loved it. Having Morgan in Lausanne and seeing her appreciation for the city allowed me to fall deeper in love with Lausanne. I feel so blessed to be in this amazing place.

It snowed again today and the city is covered in white again! It is so beautiful. This weekend I am staying again and plan to go skiing either in Leysin or Villars. I hope to take phenomenal photos to post on my blog next week!

Each time I update my blog I decided that I am going to put my favorite quote or inspirational saying at the moment. I think it will be a fun and inspiring way to live life! This was my inspiration for the day...
I often get caught up in traveling across Europe and forget about the wonders of Lausanne. This weekend was spent discovering adorable Swiss wine bars, eating delicious cheese fondue, meeting fun locals, and making new friends that will last a lifetime. I am so excited about my developing friendships this semester. I feel so blessed to have such amazing people in my life. This semester my goal is to live life to its fullest. I want to cut out stress, negativity, and drama. I am confident that I will be able to do this and I know that this semester will be one that I will never forget. I already miss everyone terrible but I am only 11 weeks away from coming home! I will update more on Monday about my new experiences!
My journey started around 7 am Saturday morning with an already delayed flight out of SFO, a bomb threat at Heathrow, and plenty of canceled flights due to the unusual amounts of snow across Europe. Immediately I realized that my day would be filled with sitting in airports for hours and copious amounts of communication among family members and British Airways officials. After being on hold with British Airways for nearly 70 minutes, we decided to pack up and head to the airport. Upon arrival, my tenacious and shameless Mother barged into the Administration office at Sea-Tac where she yelled, "my daughter has a crisis". The worried department manager quickly rose and asked what the crisis was. Turning out to be a small concern in the realm of thousands of canceled flights and stranded passengers, the nice lady (named Sandy) helped anyway. Miraculously, she re-booked me on a direct flight from Sea-Tac to London Heathrow, which was originally a canceled flight that was two days late in leaving. I said my goodbyes to my beloved family and hoped on a plane (about 6 hours later). My 9 hour flight to London was easy and relaxing, minus the entertainment system failure. Upon arrival in an unseasonably and unusual winter wonderland in London, I realized I wasn't going anywhere anytime soon. I disembarked off of the plane and transferred terminals where my flight to Geneva was supposed to leave from. After seeing six canceled flights on British Airways to Geneva before mine, I panicked a little bit and spoke with the customer services desk. My flight was supposedly on time, which made no sense because it was scheduled to leave at 11:45 am and the Geneva airport was closed (and had been since 6 am) due to unexpected heavy snowfall and the need to de-ice and clear the runways. My flight was allotted the reward of being one of the first 'tester' flights, so to speak, to land in Geneva since its re-opening at 12:30. So off we went after I sat in the Heathrow airport for another 6 hours praying that my flight would go. We finally arrived in Geneva and it was so beautiful. Everything was a complete white out with about 2 feet of new snow. I got off the plane, once again, grabbed my luggage and hopped on a train to Lausanne. For the next 45 minutes I stared outside at the gorgeous snow that covered all the trees and Swiss chalets. I felt thankful and happy to have made it home. Many of my friends remained stranded in various towns across Europe ranging from Munich to Zurich. Although it took twice as long to get to Lausanne, I felt so blessed that I made it in time to start school this morning.

Today is Monday in Lausanne and it is 4 pm my time. I started school today, which embedded a serious of emotions inside of me. I was eager, yet scared, and excited to embark on my second journey abroad. My class schedule is going to be quite a challenge but I think that I am ready for it. I am taking International Business Law and its Environment, Intercultural Communication, Western Heritage 3, and French 3. I am excited for a series of interesting projects and field trips to come.

Thank you for all of you who have made it possible for me to be in Lausanne again. I appreciate it beyond words can explain and feel so grateful for each and every one of you. I am beyond elated to be home again.

Love to all and God bless
I got home Wednesday, December 10th and was first greeted in LA by Sarah, Savannah, and Justice and then finally greeted at my gate in Seattle by the rest of my lovely family (Mom, Dad, + Heather)! Upon my arrival in LA I quickly cleared customs, re-checked my luggage and headed to In n Out for my first grilled cheese fix in three months! It was nothing short of delicious.
I am so thankful to be home for the Holiday season and want to thank all of you for making this possible. Through your continued love and support I was able to come home for the Holidays. I will be creating a Christmas letter in the next few days. I am now just settling in and am preparing for my next semester abroad. I feel so blessed to have such amazing opportunities and to have amazing friends and family.

Happy Holidays to my beloved family and friends! You are greatly loved and missed.Chelsea Cowleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16997642801139923047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951363124514081785.post-20434246085867609452009-11-27T14:52:00.000+01:002009-11-27T14:56:25.290+01:00Lausanne Family Thanksgiving
Last night my program celebrated Thanksgiving together. We invited all of our teachers, staff, and their families. It was amazing! We had 110 guests that were all so cheerful and thankful. It was so much fun. We were assigned seats based on the name that we received on our pilgrim hats. I got David Beckham and sat at the famous athletes table! It was a very neat idea and the tables were beautifully decorated for fall. The food was surprisingly wonderful. After days and days of aiding our visiting faculty via 'stuffing committees' 'pie committees' etc. the food all came together! My favorites were the stuffing and the mashed potatoes. My expectations were completely surpassed and I had an awesome Thanksgiving. Although I'm sad that I could not share it with my family, I know that there is always next year! I hope you guys had a phenomenal Thanksgiving!! Here are some photos.
It has been a long time since I have last updated my blog and I apologize greatly for that. I have so busy and caught up in the whirlwind that is school, traveling, figuring out my four-year-plan, and learning French! Since I last wrote I have traveled to quite a few places. After Milan and Dijon, I traveled to Avignon, Corsica (which is an island off of the South of France), Geneva, Interlaken (which is the extreme sports capital of Switzerland), Venice, Tuscany, Florence, and an adorable Swiss town called Gruyere. Let's start with Avignon.

Avignon

We stopped in Avignon on our way to Corsica, which was an unexpected pleasant surprise. Avignon is an interesting place that has an interesting history. During the the 15th Century, the Palace of the Popes went back in forth from Rome to Avignon and to Rome again. This was all happening because of the people's realization of the corruption of the church through papal authority and the selling of indulgences. As you probably know, in the 15th Century and before, the Pope was the ultimate ruler of the state. He decided everything from military action to the rights of the peoples. With religious ruling generally comes corruption. In attempt to overcome this, the church in Rome decided to move the Pope to Avignon, which is a small town in France. This is where the Pope lived for a short amount of time. We were able to see "The Palace of the Popes" which was very interesting and a delightful surprise. Anyway, because the Pope moved to Avignon this caused confusion. At this time three different people claimed that they were the Pope and this made the people very upset. Essentially, they wanted reform in the church but the church failed to reform themselves. This was known as the Great Schism. This then led to the Protestant Reformation. It was so interesting to see this Palace in Avignon because I had always studied the Great Schism and the Reformation but to actually see why this happened and where was extremely interesting. Not to mention, Avignon was beautiful and was an adorable town.

Corsica

Corsica was my schools 'Educational Field Trip' for the semester and it was breathtakingly beautiful. My school chose Corsica because it is French speaking and is a place that students would not normally venture to on their own. Corsica was interesting because it was an exotic island, full of sunshine, beaches, and good wine, yet we were on a field trip and were being herded around like cattle all day for five days with very little free time. To be honest, it was not very educational but I greatly appreciated the experience that I was given. Corsica is famous for being Napoleon Bonaparte's birthplace. We did see the apartment in which he was born, which was a very exciting experience. However, we later found out that Napoleon was very hated, especially by the French, and that the furniture in the Apartment in which he was born were all replicas. We felt quite cheated. We also ventured to a mountain town one of the days which was quite beautiful. Another day we took a four hour boat ride to this incredible 'best kept secret' island called Girolata. It was absolutely incredible and was worth all of the herding around and fake Napoleon sites. It was situated on a little cove in the Mediterranean Sea and only had 18 residents and two small restaurants. There were cows on the beach and the water was the most incredible blue I have ever seen. Of course, we thought it was very necessary to go skinny dipping in the Mediterranean Sea, so we did. It was an unforgettable memory that I will never forget. Overall Corsica was an awesome place, full of beauty, rich history, and interesting people. Maybe someday I will go back. I would love to live in Girolata.

Geneva

My "Enriching the International Experience" class took a field trip to the city Geneva, which is about 45 minutes away by train. My program director is an International Lawyer from Ireland and she is a spokeswoman for Amnesty International. With this said, she is an amazing woman with tons and tons of connections. She was able to arrange a field trip for us to the United Nations, which was amazing to see. We were able to go inside the building and see the major conference rooms that Presidents and Ambassadors from all over the world attend. We also saw a few smaller conferences but it was still amazing. It opened my eyes to the world even further and allowed me to realize that we have so much potential in our lives to make a difference. We also saw the Red Cross Museum which was amazing and inspiring. We also had the opportunity to see the Reformation Museum which was interesting because we were studying it at the time. I saw John Calvin's original signature as well as Martin Luther's. They were two of the most influential Reformation men in history. They were responsible for spreading the Reformation and Luther wrote the 95 Theses, which began to Reformation. It was a fabulous field trip.

Interlaken

After non-stop traveling we decided to stay locally and explore Switzerland. We chose to go to Interlaken. This was Halloween weekend and seeing as though Halloween does not exist in Europe, Interlaken was the perfect escape! Interlaken is known as the extreme sports capital of Switzerland (maybe even Europe). People come from all over the world to sky dive, canyon jump, paraglide, etc. There is also incredible hiking, horseback riding, biking trails, and an adorabable town. This is the typical Swiss town. It is surrounded by gorgeous snow capped mountains and a beautiful lake that will literally take your breath away. We rented bikes and rode all around the city and explored. I would love to go back to Interlaken to hike in the mountains and explore further. It is so beautiful! Sadly, this was only a day trip and we did not have enough time to explore more of the town.

Venice

I spent my fall break in Venice with my two best friends from Pepperdine, Carson and Azzurra. They are both studying abroad in the London program so we all met up for a romantic week in Venice together. It was absolutely amazing. I took my first 6 hour train ride alone to Venice and although it was long and awkward at times, I overcame my fear of traveling alone on trains! It took a lot of effort but it went smoothly. In Venice, we took a nice gondola ride through the beautiful canals while our rather attractive 'gondolier' man explained the city to us. We ate wonderful meals and went to fabulous museums. We went to the Peggy Guggenheim museum which is situated right on the Grand Canal and it was the best museum I've been to thus far. It was full of beautiful gardens and contemporary art. It was amazing. We also went to the Galleria Della Academia which was an emotional experience. Leonardo DaVinci's "Vitruvian Man" sketch was on display and we were able to see this in person. This sketch was his version of the 'ideal man' and can only be seen in a museum for three months every three years to prevent damage. We were lucky that it happened to be on display in Venice at the time. My best friend Azzurra is a dual US Citizen and Italian citizen and with this said she has tons of family all throughout Italy (mainly Rome, Venice, and Florence). In Venice we had two separate lunches with delightful people that Azzurra introduced us to. We had amazing authentic, home cooked five course lunches two days in a row with incredible Italian wine. It was an amazing experience. We also had the pleasure of seeing her families art collection in the "Palazzo Cini" which was her great-grandfathers collection that was donated to Venice by her grandmother Yana. Inside there were incredible pieces of art by the great Renaissance painters Giotto and Piero Della Francesca and other incredible antiques and gems. I had an absolutely incredible week with both Carson and Azzurra and it only made me realize more how lucky I am to have them in my life. They are two amazing girls that I know I will be lifelong friends with.

Tuscany (Montalcino)

Without a doubt the best weekend yet. This weekend was organized to celebrate Carson's 20th birthday. We had a girls weekend in Tuscany and Florence which consisted of nine girls all brought together through love. This group of girls serves as my inspiration and the reason I love Pepperdine so much. Azzurra's cousin Stella owns a vineyard in Montalcino, the region famous for their "Brunello" red wine. Her cousin so kindly allowed all nine of the girls to stay at her home in the adorable medieval town of Montalcino in Tuscany. Not only did she provide us a place to stay, she insisted on providing us with the most incredible food I've ever eaten and the most incredible wine I've ever drank. I have never experienced so much hospitality until this weekend. We ate mouth watering Lasagna (I ate beef for the first time since my Happy Meal days), Olive Oil that was made the morning we ate it, Penne Pasta that was the most delicious thing I've literally ever eaten. Words cannot describe how good this food was. And not to mention the wine, oh my gosh. I do not even know where to start with the wine, all I can say is WOW. She also took us to her vineyard and gave us a tour. We got to run through the fall colored vineyards and take incredible pictures. We also climbed into a medieval fortress and were able to see the entire region of Tuscany. It was literally INCREDIBLE. We also went to a cathedral that was made entirely of alabaster marble that was transparent and we saw the monks perform their daily chants. My words cannot not do justice for this weekend but maybe my pictures can...

Coming from Tuscany, Florence was a bit of a let down. The Duomo is absolutely breathtaking, the bridge is quite beautiful, and I really enjoyed the Flea Markets. That is about it...Overall I thought it was quite dirty and unattractive. Here are my favorite parts though.

Two of our friends from London came to visit (Scott and Claire) so we decided to go to the small Swiss town of Gruyere. It was absolutely beautiful. It was an excellent representation of a typical Swiss Town. Full of chalets, fondue, and adorable window boxes. This town is the homeland of Gruyere cheese, which is sold in America and is delicious, and is also the homeland of Callier Swiss Chocolate, yum! We went to the Gruyere cheese factory and we saw where the majority of Swiss Cheese is created. It was quite fascinating to see the giant machines and the storage rooms where they age the cheese. The town was very small but had an adorable castle that was decorated for Christmas, adorable souvenir shops, and wonderful fondue restaurants. Since living in Switzerland, I have consumed many-a-fondue and I can honestly say that this town had the best fondue I've ever had! It was so amazing. Delicious mouth-melting cheese. So so good! Here are some photos...
I just got back from an incredible weekend in Milan, Italy and Dijon, France. On Friday we went to Milan for the day because it is only a quick 3 hour train ride away. We went to the Duomo cathedral and it was absolutely amazing. So gigantic and gorgeous. We toured around that part of the city for quite some time and had lunch at a nice Italian cafe. Afterward we went to the main square where we had pigeons flying all over us and landing on our arms. It was quite scary but really awesome at the same time. We were only in Milan for a short time but we decided to go back to Lausanne Friday night to save money and to go to the concert in Dijon.

On Saturday I went early to Dijon, France with a few of my girlfriends to hangout in the city and to go to the concert, I absolutely loved Dijon. It was such an awesome city. It is the home of mustard and burgundy wines. We were surrounded by mustard and wine!! Also in the city there is an amazing Notre Dame catehdral and a Palace where the Ducs used to live. Dijon is one of the oldest mid evil towns in Europe. It was so cute with the cobblestone streets and Gothic architecture. At night we went to the most amazing concert i've ever been to. I can easily say is was one of the best nights of my life. We saw David Guetta who is a pioneer DJ of french house music. He is considered to be the 5th best DJ in the world. The concert was at a venue called "Le Chat Noir" (The black cat). There were HUNDREDS of people everywhere-so hot and sweaty but truly a night I will remember for the rest of my life. I danced from 11 pm-6 am straight (not exaggerating) with one water break. I was in my own world. It was so so so incredible. You tube his music!! It's life changing. After we danced until 6 am we got on a 6:30 am train back to Lausanne and miraculously made it back without missing our train stops and connections.

I truly had an incredible weekend full of adventure and fabulous stories. I am leaving for Corsica on Tuesday with my school. We are going for 1 week. I am so excited. I will keep in touch!

Hope all is wellChelsea Cowleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16997642801139923047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951363124514081785.post-10697200888363398962009-10-08T16:37:00.000+02:002009-11-27T14:57:30.033+01:00Travel Plans!I am off to Milan and Dijon, France this weekend!!
